Alan Richardson
Managing Director
After a banking career of 30 years I specialized in Direct Debits & have spent the last 10 years in consultancy, and working with bureaux & software houses to provide Direct Debit Solutions for our customers.
Processing Direct Debits
First we must send off the new payer's instructions to their bank and this is normally done electronically using AUDDIS (Automated Direct Debit Instruction Service).
This is done by sending a BACS file off giving details of the payer's account and their Direct Debit Reference. Your bank will normally ask you to allow 8 days to lodge the new instruction prior to your first collection. You will be advised of any new instructions which can not be accepted by the payer's bank.
Secondly your Collection File should be sent off 2 working days minimum before the Direct Debit is due. Remember BACS is a 3 day collection cycle. On the 3rd & 4Th day of the Collection Cycle you may be advised of your unpaid items which are available on the BACS Website, & are called ARUDD reports (Automated Return of Unpaid Direct Debits). The report will give you the reason for these dishonoured payments.
During each month you will be advised by BACS if any payers cancel or amendment their instructions with their bank. This report is called ADDACS (Automated Direct Debit Amendment & Cancellation Service). The reports are easy to follow and give you the reasons for these cancellations and amendments.
